Chances are you have seen someone with spider veins, or you have them yourself. Most women suffer from the problem to varying degrees. You may wonder though, just what causes the little annoyances? If you suffer from them, then you may also wonder: can they be treated?

Spider veins are caused when blood does not circulate correctly in the legs. Unlike varicose veins, spider veins are created from small capillaries that swell from blood that has pooled in the legs.

Spider veins tend to take on a web shaped pattern, thus the name. They cannot be felt, and they do not cause pain. Spider veins are not serious problems, but often people who suffer from them may also suffer from the varicose variety, which can be potentially dangerous.

One question you may have is a wondering of how they are caused. If you do not yet have spider veins, there are steps you can take to help avoid them. People who stand for prolonged periods of time are susceptible.

In addition, childbirth, puberty, poor circulation, and menopause can also lead to the vein problems. While not all causes are avoidable, you can try to limit the amount of time you have to stand, where supportive shoes when you must, and avoid crossing your legs when you sit.

Thankfully, there is a treatment for spider veins. If you have only one or two instances of the purple veins, then you may not be worried about them. However, for some people, the veins can cover the backs of their legs and ankles. These people may be very self aware and may wish to have them treated.

The method of treating spider veins is called sclerotherapy. This method is very successful and relatively pain free. The procedure is done in a physician’s office. The doctor injects the vein with a solution that causes the vein to clear away, collapse and disappear from sight.

The total procedure time can be as long as thirty minutes, depending on the extent of the damage. You may also have to come back for more than one procedure if you have sever spider veins.

Another treatment for very tiny veins is a laser, which completely destroys the vein. Lasers can be excellent on small veins, but they do cause some discomfort and bruising.

With either treatment, the removal is permanent and can give your legs a new lease on life. The procedures do not require surgery or stitches, and they are for the most part, pain free.
