Almost everyone has stood in front of the mirror and imagined what they would look like with a little cosmetic reshaping: a slight change in the eyelids or brows, plumped out lips, some work on those smile lines; a nudge here or there could change your look in subtle and attractive ways.

What is Rhinoplasty

Nose surgery, also known as rhinoplasty, is one of the most common of all cosmetic surgeries for both the new look or to reconstruct or correct the nose after injury. Nose surgery brings balance to the face and proportions your nose to a more pleasing size, either bigger or smaller as needed.

Changing the size and position of the nostrils is also common. Visible bumps or depressions on any part of the nose could be smoothed through a skilful scalpel.

Why do people have Rhinoplasty

A person who is self-conscious about their nose makes a good candidate for the surgery. Your nose changes as you age, growing larger, and affecting how people view you.

Rhinoplasty candidates should be well adjusted and happy with their lives, only desiring to enhance their appearance. No cosmetic procedure can repair a poor self-image!

Rhinoplasty is used to repair a deviated septum, breathing problems, birth defects, and injuries and sports accidents. While still considered cosmetic surgery, these procedures do much more than affect how a person views themselves in the mirror – it could be vital to the person’s well being.

If you are considering nose surgery, keep in mind that a change in one part of your face will change how it interacts with other areas. Consult with your cosmetic surgeon to project what your new look will actually bring to your face. If you’re living in the UK you could consult Transform, the UK’s largest Cosmetic Surgery which carries out rhinoplastry procedures (more information is on their website). If you’re living in the US, you could consult the rhinoplasty experts in Texas.

Computer programs are ideal ways to consider your options and whether or not you will need to explore cosmetic surgery for the chin, eyes, or ears. A qualified surgeon can perform multiple surgeries at once, saving you money and recovery time.

Preparing for Nose Surgery

Get into good general health before any major surgery to speed healing time. Proper nutrition is essential to strengthen your body. Quit smoking before the surgery because smoking interferes with blood flow to the skin, leaving less oxygen to help the wound heal. Alcohol should be avoided for at least a week before surgery.

Discuss any medications you may be taking to ensure there are no interactions or increased risks. Certain natural foods and supplements could also cause interactions, such as vitamin E supplements, green tea, and gingko biloba. Let your surgeon know about your diet and medications.

Some surgeons recommend large doses of vitamin C before surgery to assist with clotting and wound healing. Discuss this with your doctor.

Be Aware of Risks Associated With Any Surgery

Always remember that surgery is surgery, no matter where it is performed or why. Rhinoplasty will cause you temporary discomfort, bruising, swelling, and possible bleeding or infection. All surgeries carry such risks.

In addition, unless you have carefully considered all your options, you may find yourself displeased with the results. Go into the surgery with a clear mind and all your questions answered, and you will be more likely to love your new look.

Perhaps it is one of the most common cosmetic surgeries performed, and it is one of the most visually noticeable procedures that a person can undergo. Rhinoplasty is so common that people often spend gossip sessions discussing who they think had a nose job and who did not.

Sure, you have heard of the nose job. You may even know a few people who have undergone rhinoplasty. However, how much do you really know about the cosmetic procedure? Here are some common questions about the surgery with answers to help you better understand just what rhinoplasty is.

Why do people get a nose job? There are many reasons to undergo rhinoplasty. Many people have it done for cosmetic reasons. They may have a severe bridge or abnormal nostrils. There are also people who have physical problems like trouble breathing or snoring, and they may choose to have corrective rhinoplasty.

What all can be done during rhinoplasty? No a doctor can not give you a brand new nose, but with the major advancements in surgery, they can make you feel like you have one.

Some of the things that can be altered during rhinoplasty include width of the nose, the profile of the nose and bridge shape, the size of the tip of the nose, nostril issues and symmetry.

What is the procedure like? You will be put under general anesthesia so that you will not know or remember anything that happens. The incisions are usually made either inside the nostrils or on the outside of the bottom of the nose.

The skin tissue is lifted and the doctor will have access to the bones and cartridge that makes up the shape of your nose. If more tissue needs to be added, the surgeon may use cartridge from other parts of the body.

Once the procedure is complete, the tissue and skin is replaced and stitched. In cases where nostrils need to be shaped, more incisions may be required.

What is the recovery like? You will have to spend a week with a nose splint to protect the area. You will most likely experience bruising and some pain; however, medication should be able to control the pain.

During this time, you will experience swelling, which should reside in no more than two weeks.

Once your surgery and recovery are complete, you will be able to enjoy a new nose that is permanently changed.
